A life-long Elgin resident, George began his handball career at the age of 18 at the Elgin YMCA. For the next thirty years he compiled an outstanding record of longevity and excellence. In singles play, George won the Elgin City Open Championship in 1944, 1947, 1948, 1953, 1954, 1961, and 1963. Combined with his eleven second place finishes, he competed in the Singles Championship match in 18 of the 25 years from 1940 to 1964. In Doubles play, he won the Elgin City Open Championship in the years 1940, 1942, 1944, 1945, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1958, 1960, 1961, and 1963. At the state level, he reached the semi-finals in the singles competition in 1944 and 1948, and he finished in second place twice in the doubles competition.
