Kevin graduated from Larkin High School in 1988 and is considered one of the best all-around athletes ever to come out of Elgin.  He still holds the state high school shot put record set in 1988 with a toss of 66 feet and 1-3/4 inches en route to the state championship.  Kevin played football for the Royals and was a two-time All-Upstate Eight Conference selection.  Coleman went on to win five Big Eight Conference shot put titles at the University of Nebraska.  He was NCAA indoor national title-holder in 1992 and 1993.  The winner of All-American recognition four times, he finished fifth in the 1992 NCAA outdoors meet and sixth in the 1993 outdoors meet.  Coleman qualified for two appearances in the U. S. Track and Field Trials in the shot, finishing sixth in 1992 in New Orleans when he was the best collegiate finisher.  In 1996, he placed ninth in the United States Olympic Trials.  Also in 1996, he was an alternate in weight lifting on the U. S. Olympic team in Atlanta.
